The Challenge
In recent years, jewelry has become one of the largest Chinese exports. Growing concern about the quality and safety of costume jewelry in the United States, Europe and other countries around the world has led to the establishment of mandatory standards or regulations to ensure the safety of costume jewelry. In January 2010, two U.S. retail chains withdrew childrens jewelry from store shelves following reports of high cadmium content in children's jewelry. On 13 January 2010, the U.S. Congress proposed a bill called the "Children's Toxic Metals Act" to prohibit the manufacture, sale or distribution in commerce of children's jewelry containing cadmium, barium or antimony.
